If You Want a Mercedes in 6 Months, Join Bollywood — Not the Bar": A Brutal Reality Check Every Young Lawyer Needs

If you’re stepping into the courtroom thinking you’ll be driving a BMW by New Year’s, just because you have a law degree and an Instagram account — stop. You’re in the wrong profession.
Chief Justice of India, BR Gavai, recently dropped a bomb of hard truth:
“If one wants to argue in courts without any experience and own a Mercedes or BMW in six months, then one needs to understand their motive.”
He’s right. Brutally right.
As someone who's travelled from small-time reporting desks in Dhaka to the corridors of the Supreme Court, let me tell you — the real legal profession doesn't start with a car key. It starts with carrying someone else’s files. And if that hurts your ego, get ready — courtrooms will tear it apart daily.
🔎 Law Isn’t Netflix. It’s Not 'Suits'.
This new breed of lawyers wants:
Nameplates before they've earned a name.
Followers before they’ve made arguments.
AC chambers before they’ve tasted the sweat of Tis Hazari courtrooms.
What they don’t want is: patience, pain, perseverance, or poverty — all of which are part of the real syllabus of becoming a good lawyer.
🪑 No, Junior. That Chair Isn’t Yours Yet.
CJI Gavai also pointed out something that honestly hurts more than a slap:
“Junior lawyers don’t even offer a seat to seniors in court.”
True. I’ve seen it. And I’ve also seen the same juniors cry in corridors when a judge tears them apart for filing half-baked bail applications. One even fainted in court.
The profession demands respect — for the law, for the court, and your seniors. Not just because it’s tradition — but because they’ve bled where you’ve not even stepped.
💬 Here’s My Advice — Straight and Unfiltered:
If you’re lucky, go and talk to your seniors. Ask them how they climbed the ladder. Ask them about the unpaid years, the betrayals, the nights they sat outside courtrooms with empty wallets and heavy files.
You’ll learn this: the adage “slow and steady wins the race” isn’t a cliché in law — it’s gospel truth.
🧠 Law Is Not a Shortcut to Luxury. It’s a War for Justice.
You don’t enter this field to become rich overnight. You enter it because you believe in justice, because you want to fight, because you want to serve — not flaunt.
Your first success is not a car or chamber. It’s the first case where your argument changes a life. That’s your real BMW moment. And trust me — when that moment comes, the rest will follow.
⚖️ What Needs to Change — and Why
We need a mandatory apprenticeship period for all fresh law graduates. No court appearances for the first two years. Just grind. Learn drafting. Study files. Watch trials. Face real-life law.
Let’s weed out the arrogant quick-fix crowd and protect the sanctity of this profession.
🧷 Final Words to Young Lawyers
Law is not a ramp walk. It’s a minefield.
It’s not about power dressing — it’s about power thinking.
If you want to enjoy the glory — be prepared to swallow the dirt.
You want a Mercedes in six months? Try Bollywood.
You want respect in court? Earn it — slow, steady, and scarred.
