Bangladesh’s Fearless Journalist Sumi Khan Meets Indian Supreme Court Advocate Dr. Ajay Kumar Pandey

Press Freedom Knows No Borders:

Renowned Bangladeshi journalist Sumi Khan recently visited my office in New Delhi, leading to an engaging discussion that traversed journalism, law, democracy, and the challenges faced by media professionals in South Asia.

The meeting brought back memories of my own journalistic journey before I entered the legal profession. During our interaction, we spoke at length about my years as a journalist with The Independent, Dhaka, and later as a reporter with the Oman Daily Observer in Muscat. Those assignments provided me an opportunity to travel extensively in Bangladesh and interact with several prominent personalities, including the Secretary General of the Communist Party of Bangladesh and the Chief Justice of Bangladesh.
We also reflected on my reporting days in Oman, where I frequently covered issues concerning the large Bangladeshi expatriate community. Their contribution to the Gulf economy, their aspirations, and the challenges they faced formed an important part of my journalistic work at that time.

The conversation naturally shifted to the changing landscape of journalism. Sumi Khan, known internationally for her courageous reporting and commitment to independent journalism, shared her experiences and concerns about the pressures confronting journalists today. We discussed the growing challenges faced by media professionals working in difficult environments and the need for stronger legal and institutional safeguards to protect freedom of expression and the independence of the press.
What many people may not know is that Sumi is also a lawyer by qualification and belongs to a distinguished third-generation family of legal professionals. This common ground made our discussion particularly meaningful, as we explored the relationship between journalism, law, accountability, and democratic institutions.

A substantial part of our interaction focused on the legal issues she is presently facing in relation to her former employer. After understanding the broad contours of the matter, I assured her of whatever legal guidance and assistance may be possible within the framework of law.

Our discussion reinforced a belief that journalists and lawyers, despite operating in different spheres, often pursue the same objective: the defence of truth, justice, and individual rights. Independent journalism remains one of the strongest pillars of a democratic society, and journalists working under vulnerable conditions deserve both legal protection and public support.

The meeting was more than a professional exchange. It was a reminder that the values of press freedom, rule of law, and human dignity transcend national boundaries. Whether in Dhaka, Muscat, or New Delhi, the challenges may differ in form, but the commitment to truth and justice remains universal.

In an era when independent voices face increasing pressure across the world, conversations such as these acquire even greater significance. They reaffirm the need for solidarity among journalists, lawyers, and all those who believe that democracy flourishes only when truth can be spoken without fear.
