SC rejects a request to reconsider dropping the qualifying percentile for NEET-PG 2023

Supreme Court declined to hear a case challenging the National Eligibility Cumulative Entrance Test Postgraduate (NEET-PG) counseling cutoff qualifying percentile's lowering to zero.

The action will make it possible for everyone who took the test to attend counseling.

The move has received criticism since many believe that it will allow non meritorious medical students to enroll in specialized postgraduate programs, endangering public health.

In the midst of the present admission session, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare lowered the cut-off percentage to zero across all categories for NEET PG 2023 counseling.

A notice from the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), Directorate of Health Services, Government of India stated that the qualifying percentile for postgraduate courses (medical/dental) for NEET PG counseling 2023 had been reduced to "zero" across all categories by MoHFW.

Before a bench led by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, the case was brought up for urgent listing. The bench stated that the plea would be heard during the day.

The petitioner's attorney testified at the hearing that the plea was actually made on the grounds that the qualifying percentile had been lowered rather than for admission alone.

The bench, which also included Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, informed the petitioners' attorney, "You (petitioner) are not an aspirant," and declined to take the petitioners' argument into consideration.
