Man arrested for invading pitch during cricket World Cup final gets bail

When Johnson invaded the field during the India vs. Australia final in Ahmedabad, he was taken into custody. On Tuesday, his bail was granted.

Tuesday saw the release of an Australian man who had been detained after running onto the field during the cricket World Cup final between India and Australia, despite security measures.

On Sunday, the man—who has been named as Wen Johnson—entered the field at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium without permission. Before getting apprehended by security personnel, he attempted to embrace Virat Kohli.

He had on a face mask in the colors of Palestine and a t-shirt that said "Free Palestine."

Charges of criminal trespass (section 447) and inflicting harm to dissuade public officers from performing their duties (section 332) led Chandkheda police to arrest him. After that, the matter was given to Crime Branch, who on Monday appeared in court in Gandhinagar with Johnson. Johnson was placed on one-day remand so that more investigation could be done.

Today, the police brought the accused before the court after a one-day period of remand.

The Australian national was freed on bond by the Gandhinagar court, and the police did not ask for an extension of the remand order.

Johnson has been granted bail with a Rs. 10,000 bond requirement.
