Midnight SOS: A Legal Lifeline Across Borders
It was midnight in December, and the chilly winter in Delhi was at its worst, making even the dead shiver in the graveyard. Ram, a renowned advocate of Delhi, was in the deepest slumber when his phone suddenly rang. A message flashed on his mobile: SOS. Despite the lack of courage to take the call at this hour and the pressure of a busy court day ahead, he hesitantly picked up the phone.
On the other end was Smith, an old client who had taken some odd service during the early days of Ram's career. Faintly remembering him, Ram listened as Smith explained his dire situation. "I'm in big trouble in St. Petersburg and currently in police custody. I was allowed one call, and I chose you. Please, save me."
By now, Ram was a big name in criminal practice. However, helping Smith in an unknown country with no case details seemed impossible. His first thought was to give up and get back to bed, as he had a pressing matter in the Supreme Court the next day. But his conscience wouldn't allow it; he practiced advocacy with a human touch.
Suddenly, he remembered a firm in Delhi, Supreme Law International, which claimed to provide legal services globally. He hurriedly searched for their number on Google and dialed. To his surprise, the phone was picked up on the second ring. He shared Smith's telephone number and explained the situation. Ram was assured of help within a few hours.
The team at 4C Supreme Law International got active immediately. They contacted Marco in Italy, the founder of the World Independent Lawyers League (WILL), an organization promising to work in 23 time zones around the world. A few calls later, a local lawyer, a WILL member, was pressed into service. The lawyer managed to reach Smith and secured his release on bail from the police station.
Once the task was accomplished and Smith sent a thank-you note, Ram felt as if he had grown taller in those few hours. The next morning, while driving to the Supreme Court, he was singing, "Stand Up and Fight," a song hailing advocates and their unwavering spirit:
Stand up, stand tall, you defenders of right,
With justice as our beacon, we fight through the night.
No borders can bind us, no chains hold us tight,
For we are the advocates, bringers of light.
He was heard calling his secretary to book a ticket to Warsaw, where the WILL annual meet was scheduled to take place in September 2024. He was keen to meet every hero of WILL, individuals trying to connect dots all over the world and bring independent legal services to those in need.
