Lessons from the Polo Ground
Lessons from the Polo Ground:
Beyond the Game
I recently had the privilege of attending a Polo match at the President Polo Ground between Team Cavalry and President Bodyguards. While I may not be a Polo player myself, the experience provided valuable insights beyond the power-packed game that unfolded before my eyes.
Polo, as it turns out, is more than just a sport of skillful horse handling and lightning-fast ball maneuvers. One key lesson gleaned from the match was the absence of defensive playing – a stark departure from many other sports. In Polo, there is an inherent emphasis on relentless forward momentum, where players strategically navigate their horses and execute various techniques, from backhanders to frontal attacks.
Furthermore, the principle of non-obstruction stood out prominently. Unlike some sports where blocking opponents is part of the strategy, Polo encourages an open field where players must outmaneuver each other without hindrance. This aspect adds an extra layer of challenge and excitement to the game.
The post-match horsetrick show, led by the daring riders from President Bodyguards under the command of Lt. Col. Amit Bariwa, showcased not only skill but audacity. The display, including galloping horses charging against each other and overcoming obstacles like fire, real gypsies, motorcycles, and even a man sleeping in bed, highlighted the exceptional training these horses undergo, defying the norms of nature.
The commentary by Sharad Saxena added another dimension to the event. Drawing parallels between military training and the rare training of horses, he emphasized the ability to train against nature. The spectacle of horses charging towards fire demonstrated not only courage but the willingness to face challenges head-on, echoing the ethos of military training.
What struck me most was the idea of challenging the challenge itself. The event showcased the art of creating difficult situations intentionally, rather than waiting to be challenged by external difficulties. Confronting adversity with an attitude of "oh, only this much, bus itna hi," reflects a mindset of resilience and proactive problem-solving.
In essence, the Polo Ground became a metaphor for life's challenges. Beyond the exhilarating game, it imparted lessons on relentless forward movement, the art of non-obstruction, facing challenges head-on, and the proactive creation of difficulties. These lessons, drawn from the world of Polo, serve as valuable insights applicable to various aspects of life.
